Do You Know?

Do you know that a husband or wife injured in an auto accident caused by either one can make a claim against the other spouse?  Any settlement or jury award is almost always paid by the responsible  spouse’s insurance company.

Do you know that  1 out of 7 people driving in Oregon have no auto insurance?   You can help protect yourself from financial ruin by carrying high uninsured motorist, or U.M. limits, such as 250,000/500,00 or more.

Do you know that U.I.M. stands for underinsured motorist?  An underinsured motorist is one whose insurance coverage is less than your  U.I.M.coverage.  For instance, the other driver may have minimum limits of $25,000/$50,000, while you have $100,000/$300,000.   If your injuries are serious enough, you are entitled to recover the difference between your U.I.M. limit and the limit of the other driver, in addition to recovering the other driver’s limit.

Do you know that the Institue of Medicine estimated, in 1999,  that up to 98,000 people die per year due to medical wrongdoing?  This is more than twice the number of people who die annually in automobile, motorcycle and/or bicycle accidents.  Meanwhile,  sources estimate that only 1 of 6-8 patients who are injured by medical negligence bring a claim.   It has also been estimated that only 30% of the time is a patient advised by his or her doctor that the patient has been the victim of medical malpractice.

Do you know that if you are a non-paying guest, injured by a land owner on property  held open for the public’s use, that the owner is protected from lawsuits for his or her negligence?   In other words,  the heirs of a hunter  shot to death by the negligence of the property owner, on land held open for public use, would be unsuccessful in the  making of  a wrongful death claim against the land owner,  so long as the owner imposed no fee for use of his/her land.
